Split View puts Tivsy beside anything else at half width and the layout answers to the space rather than the device: shelves become fewer columns, the guide keeps its channel column and loses hours, and playback carries on. The guide has room to be a guide
On a phone the programme grid shows what is on now and what follows. On an iPad it shows four hours across a dozen channels at once, with the channel column fixed at the left, which is the only layout in which a grid is faster than a list.
When the iPad is the television
AirPlay sends what is playing to an Apple TV or a compatible set and hands back the controls, so the iPad becomes the remote rather than the screen. The picture keeps playing where you point it, and the position is remembered on the device either way.

Does the keyboard do anything?
Space plays and pauses, the arrow keys skip and change channel, and Escape leaves the player. A trackpad gets a pointer that grows over the thing under it, which is what makes a poster grid usable without touching the screen.
Can I use it in portrait?
Yes. Portrait gives the guide fewer hours and the shelves fewer columns; nothing is hidden, and nothing needs turning the iPad to reach.
